Linear in Claude Code
Claude Code reads your issues and their comments as files, and Linear's token never leaves the server.
Steps
- Connect Linear in Exporter: press “Connect” under Cloud, sign in with Apple and press “Authorize” on Linear’s page.
- Choose a folder like
~/Documents/linearand press “Sync Now”. - In your project, run
claude --add-dir ~/Documents/linear/linear-exportso Claude Code may read the folder. - Ask: “Read the issues assigned to ana in Northwind and list what is blocked, with the comment that says why.”
What you get
Claude Code reads each issue as one file: the front matter for the state, priority, assignee, labels and project, then the description and the whole comment thread. It can search the folder with its own tools, open the issues that match and quote them, and the files are current within a minute of a change in Linear.
~/Documents/linear/linear-export/
Northwind/NW-142 Invite flow.md
The agent never sees a Linear token: Exporter’s server holds it, and your Mac only downloads files.
Pitfalls
- The files are a copy: Claude Code can read them, not change Linear. Ask it to draft a comment, then post it yourself.
- Only what is ticked is there. An archived issue has no file.
- A large workspace takes a few minutes for its first sync. Ask when the card says synced.
Every field is in the Linear docs.
