Guides Keep your calendar

Keep your calendar as Markdown

What you did in September, in a file you can read, search and keep.

Steps

  1. Connect Calendar. Press “Connect” beside Calendar on Exporter’s home, then “Open Calendar Folder”. The panel opens in Calendar’s own folder: press “Select This Folder”. macOS asks for no calendar access, because the events are read from that folder and not through EventKit.
  2. Choose how far back. The “reads” row on the card: this year, 2 years, 5 years or all. Start with this year if you want the first sync small.
  3. Pick calendars. They are grouped by account, the way Calendar’s sidebar groups them. Untick an account and every calendar in it stays out.
  4. Press “Sync Now”. Each month becomes one file: 2026-09.md, 2026-10.md.

What you get

One file per month, with a heading per day and one line per event: the time, what it is, the calendar it came from and where it is. All-day events come first in a day and say “all day” rather than gaining a midnight. A repeating event is on every day it happens, because Exporter reads the occurrences Calendar keeps for its own views. The month’s front matter says how many events it holds and which calendars they came from, so a vault can filter on them, and a line carries repeats::, join:: and with:: for a query to read.

Pitfalls

  • Scheduled reminders show up in Calendar as a calendar of their own, and they are already in the reminders export. Untick the “Reminders” account on the card.
  • Calendar keeps about two years of occurrences for its own views. “all” means everything this Mac has, which on most Macs is those two years.
  • Your first 100 events are free. The rest need the one-time unlock.
