Guides Apple's Markdown export

Does Apple Notes export Markdown?

Yes, since macOS 26, a note at a time. For the whole library, kept current, use Exporter.

Yes. Since macOS 26, Apple Notes itself exports Markdown: Apple’s help says to click the note and choose File › Export To › Markdown. It describes one note at a time, copied once.

Steps

  1. One note: click it in Apple Notes, choose File › Export To › Markdown, and save the file.
  2. Every note: in Exporter, press “Connect” beside Apple Notes, then “Open Apple Notes Folder”, and press “Select This Folder” without opening anything.
  3. Choose where the files go, like ~/Documents/notes, and press “Use This Folder”.
  4. Press “Sync Now”. After that, each edit in Apple Notes is written to its file.

What you get

Apple’s export gives you the note you clicked, as it was when you saved it. Exporter writes every note in the folders you tick as its own .md file, in Apple Notes’ own folder tree, or one folder per tag or smart folder. Attachments are copied into attachments/ and embedded where they were, checklists become - [ ] lines, your #tags stay in the text and links between notes become wikilinks. Each file opens with front matter: the title, the created and modified dates, and a link that reopens the note in Apple Notes.

Pitfalls

  • Exporter leaves locked notes out until you remove the lock.
  • Notes that Apple Notes has not downloaded from iCloud to this Mac yet are left out until it has.
  • Your first 100 notes are free. The one-time unlock exports the rest.

Every field is in the Apple Notes docs.
