Mail is an app you can sync

Each email becomes one Markdown file on your Mac.

Improved

• Choose Emails has two tabs, Kinds and Accounts, and an email syncs when both tick it. Updates and Promotions start unticked, and so do Drafts and Trash. Deleted mail, Spam and Junk never sync. Accounts are named by their address.
• Organize keeps emails By Date, By Account or By Kind. Changing it moves every file at the next sync, and nothing is left at the old place.
• A first sync of a large mailbox that you quit carries on where it stopped.
• The command line knows Mail: `exporter sync --source mail` and `exporter export --source mail`. `exporter sync --source calendar` now syncs Calendar; it never did.
• AI apps read your emails like every other export.
• Pressing Unlock twice opens one App Store sheet, not two.

Fixed

• Cards and counts read each app's data less often. Reading a database no longer looks like a change to it, and the card, the count and setup share one read when an app connects.
• The page that asks where the files go no longer warns that macOS will ask. The panel opens on Documents, so it is one press.

• While Messages is read for the first time, the tabs are there but dim and the list fills in as the read goes on.
• The anonymous usage stats now say on which page a new install stopped, and whether someone synced the free notes instead of unlocking. Test builds are marked, so they never count as people. Never a title, a path or a word of your notes, and still off with one switch in Settings.

Improved

• Exporter starts with a welcome. It says what the app does, then takes Apple Notes through its three steps, one page each: connect, where the files go, what syncs. The page before the Finder panel says what the panel will ask, and a cancelled panel is answered with why Exporter asks for that folder.
• Before the first sync you see how many notes are ticked and how many of them are free. The free ones are the newest. Nobody learns about the free count afterwards.
• The page that asks what syncs has what the app's card has: where the files go and in which format, how they are laid out, the tabs and the list. What you set there is what the card shows afterwards.
• Reminders and Calendar count reminders and events, on the button, under the list and on the last page. They counted lists and calendars.
• The files go to a folder in Documents unless you choose another. With Obsidian or Wander on your Mac, a vault is the next choice.
• Home shows what you sync first, then the apps on this Mac you can add, then one row that holds the rest. An app that is not connected is one line: what is free, and Connect.
• Settings is a form in four groups: General, Unlock, Privacy, Support. Command-comma opens it. Help is two groups, Contact and Learn.
• On a card, where the files go and how they are laid out read in the normal font, with Change… at the row's end.

Where the files go is one line under it, and Options… holds the folder, the format and how the files are laid out. The buttons are one row, as on a Mac: Not Now on the left, Unlock and Sync on the right.
• Every list has a header row. Select all is the checkbox at its start, right over the checkboxes it ticks, and shows a dash when only some are ticked.
• The numbers in a list have headings, and a click on a heading sorts by it. Apple Notes shows Notes and Edited by folder, the folder and Last Opened under Recent, and how often and how long a note was open under Popular. Messages shows how many messages and the last one, Contacts a card's group or company and when it changed, Reminders who a list is shared with, how many reminders and the last change, Calendar how many events, Documents the folder, kind, size and date as Finder does, Bear how many notes a tag has and when a note was edited, Screen Time a day's notifications and screen time, Claude Code a session's project, prompts and when it was last active, Wallet a pass's issuer and date. A glyph that is the same on every row is gone.
• After you unlock an app on the last page of its setup, the page says so and offers to sync what was waiting. Before, the unlock row went away and nothing else changed.
• The last page of setup has a switch, Use With AI Apps. It starts the local server that lets Claude, Cursor and VS Code read your files.
• The picture of the Finder panel on the connect page looks like a picture: a small grey window under the words "What macOS will show".
• Logseq's setup says what syncs: the graph, its pages and its journals. The page was empty.
• An app you have just set up shows as a card right away. It could stay a row that said Continue Setup until you opened the window again.
• While your files are written, the page counts what that sync writes. Apple Notes counted the whole library, and the other apps started at "0 of 0".
• The export log opens with the newest sync open, and only that one.
• A label on a card is one line in every language. "Speichert nach" and thirty more were wider than their column and broke in two.
• The setup sheet sits inside its window, under the toolbar. The window is taller for it, and the welcome and every Connect open the sheet at the same place.
• The page that asks what syncs has one rhythm: where the files go, how they are laid out and the tabs, eight points apart, and the list takes every whole row that is left.
• Under a tab like Popular or Pinned the count says both: "23 of 23 here · 1,526 in all". A folder that already holds an export says so under Saves To before the sync.
• While your files are written you can go back to the app: Continue in App closes the sheet and the sync goes on. Stop is the quiet button. A sync you stopped ends as stopped, and the last page and the export log say where.
• The last page counts what is on your Mac, with this sync's count under it. Use With AI Apps says what it starts, a local server on this Mac, and once it is on, the address to add in Claude, Cursor or VS Code, with Copy and How. Close, not Done.
• Home rows are the card's row: an app to add is 50 points tall like a synced card, and the section headers are small.
• A page's title is in the toolbar, beside the traffic lights, and not in a second bar under it. Help's icons have their colours back.
• The file format and Organize are the same kind of button.
• The tab you clicked while setting an app up is forgotten when setup ends: the card opens on its first tab.
• Send Feedback is a form on macOS 27: the message, Email with a note, Include App Info as a switch, Cancel and Send. Leaving the email empty sends anonymously.
• The setup and the export log name Apple's apps as your Mac does: Kontakte, not Contacts. Calendar's line about the free events is in your language; it was English everywhere.
• Start on the MCP Server card is drawn as the card's action. Open in Wander is too, and Wander's dot is green only when there is an export to open.
• The MCP server row says what it serves: your files, from every app you sync, not only notes.
• The Messages card's line while the index runs is in your language. It was English everywhere. VoiceOver's words for a ticked or folded row are translated too.
• When a note cannot be read, the export log now says exactly why, in the database's own words: the sqlite error code and message sit under the sentence. Before, a database that would not answer was reported as a note deleted while the export ran.
• A read waits two seconds for Notes to finish writing before it counts as refused, and a sync the database refuses twenty times in a row stops with one sentence instead of a red line per note.
• The first sync of a large Notes library starts sooner. Reading the attachments of 8,000 notes took 18 seconds and now takes a tenth of one, and counting the notes in each folder went from two and a half seconds to a hundredth. It was found because one Mac reported its own slow sync.
• On macOS 27, reminders export with their images and links. macOS 27 renumbered both inside the Reminders database, so images were missed and links were read as images.

Fixed

• Search for AI apps covers every export. A word found in a note no longer hides the Calendar, Bear, Reminders or Documents files that have it too.
• A wrong folder is answered in plain words, with what to do next.
• A sync that stops, or fails more than a tenth of its notes, reports itself, so a fix can start without you writing in. The report carries counts, failure kinds, the database's error codes and what the Notes database looked like. Never a title, a path or a word of a note, and off with the same switch as crash reports.

Exporter has a new icon

Obsidian's icon is the same size as the other icons again.

Improved

• The menu bar panel shows what you sync. Every source you connected keeps its row, and the rest fold into one line at the bottom that opens Exporter, so the panel is about half as tall as before.
• Your exports can now open in Wander, as well as Finder and Obsidian. The panel now ends like a Mac menu, with Open Exporter, Open exports in and Quit Exporter. Next to Open exports in, each app shows as its icon, and only when it is on your Mac.
• The anonymous usage stats now say what happens after someone presses buy: whether Apple's purchase sheet was closed, is waiting for approval, or failed and why. A purchase that breaks shows up the same day. Never a title, a path or a word of your notes, and still off with one switch in Settings.

Exporter can keep your files in sync after a restart

It only syncs while it is running, and until now the one way to have it start with your Mac was a switch in Settings that few people found.

Improved

• Exporter honours Reduce motion: with it on in System Settings, cards open and close at once instead of sliding. VoiceOver reads every list as one row per note, folder, conversation or day, with whether it is ticked, and ticks it on a press; a folder row opens and closes from its actions. Card headers say whether they are open and open from VoiceOver the way they do from a click, and the close, information and progress buttons that were only pictures now have names.

Fixed

• The anonymous usage stats now say where setup stops, so the steps that lose people can be fixed: which step was on screen, what came of choosing an export folder or pressing sync, why a run wrote nothing, and whether the window was closed before a first export. They also include what the app looks like on your Mac (light or dark, the screen and window size, the chip and the accessibility settings that change how it draws), and which of about thirty other apps are installed, among them notes, task, AI, reading and browser apps, so the next source is chosen from what people here actually use. Still never a title, a path or a word of your notes, and still off with the one switch in Settings.
• When Exporter crashes, freezes or opens slowly, macOS writes a report about it, and Exporter now sends that report home so it can be fixed: where in Exporter's own code it happened, the app version, macOS and the kind of Mac, and on macOS 27 which setup step or screen was open, so a freeze on the export folder step can be told from someone who simply left. It uses the report macOS already writes (MetricKit), never a note, a title or a path, and it follows the same switch in Settings as the usage stats. After a crash the next launch says so, once per version, and offers to tell us what you were doing; the feedback form can attach the last report, as its own tick box.

Calendar is a source

Connect the Calendar folder and every month becomes one markdown file: a heading per day, and a line per event with its time, the calendar it came from and where it is.

Improved

• Scheduled reminders start unticked in Calendar. Calendar keeps them in a store of its own and hands them over looking exactly like events, so a first export came out 99 reminder lines to 2 real events: eleven daily habits, each printed on every day of the month, burying a calendar underneath them. They are already in the reminders export. Tick them on if you want them in both.
• The free hundred events are the ones nearest today, in either direction. Every other source dates an item by when it was last touched, where newest is right, but Calendar's occurrences run about two years into the future, so newest-first spent the whole allowance a year out, on public holidays and birthdays, and wrote nothing from the months either side of now.
• A note that cannot be read says which of the five reasons it was. "Could not read note from database" was one sentence for a note deleted mid-run, one in Recently Deleted, one locked while the export ran, one whose body has not come down from iCloud yet, and one that genuinely did not decode. Only the iCloud one is something anyone can act on, and it is the common one: on one Mac here, 2,603 of 12,314 notes have a row and no body. It now says so, and says to open the note once in Apple Notes.
• A reminder due at a time exports with that time: `[due:: 2026-09-20T14:30]`. Reminders keeps all-day reminders apart from timed ones, so one due on a day still writes the day alone and never gains a 00:00 it did not have. Files written before this keep working, both forms read back.
• A list's sections are headings. The reminders above all the sections stay at the top with no heading, the way Reminders shows them, then one `##` per section in the list's own order. A list with no sections reads exactly as before.
• A repeating reminder says so: `[recurring:: daily]`, or `[recurring:: every 2 weeks]` when it skips periods. The repeat rule is not a field on a reminder in Apple's database and is not called recurrence anywhere in it, which is why this took a year to find.
• The list of tags Reminders keeps is read from the table it is actually in. The old read named two tables that exist on no version of macOS, so it failed every time it ran.

Fixed

• The problem report answers what it used to take an email to ask: how long you have had the app and which version you started on, what the last export run did, and what its failures were, grouped by cause. The Notes database check also stopped reporting a number that was not the one deciding the export, and stopped showing green on a library still sitting in iCloud.
• Every Reminders query now asks the database what it has before it asks for it. macOS renames and renumbers columns between releases (between macOS 15.7.7 and 27 it renamed two on the reminders table alone), and one missing column used to fail the whole read: a single rename would have taken the entire Reminders export down on a macOS nobody had tested yet. A column that is gone now costs that one field.

Wallet is a source

Connect the Passes folder and every pass becomes one markdown file: the boarding pass with its route, gate, seat and confirmation, the event ticket with its venue and block, the store card with its stamps, each with the barcode's own number and the pass's own frontmatter.

Fixed

• A watched source no longer re-exports itself. Reading a database touches the shared-memory file beside it, and that file was being watched as though somebody else had written it, so a connected source could export itself in a loop — Contacts on some Macs ran a full export every five minutes for a month. Every source now waits at least a minute between real-time runs, and keeps that floor for as long as it is connected.

Notes numbers its five highlight colors from one and Exporter counted from zero, so in HTML every highlight showed the color next to it, and a blue highlight was left out of both HTML and markdown.

Claude Code is a source

claude and every session becomes one markdown note: a paragraph per turn with the time and a block id to link to, tool calls folded to what they ran, edits as diffs, pasted images beside the note.

Improved

• Reminders is a source. Connect the Reminders folder and every list becomes one markdown file: a reminder per checkbox line with its due date, priority and a link back to Reminders, subtasks under their parent, completed reminders under their own heading, images beside them. Pills show every list, the shared ones, or the ones that changed last, and a list is the tick. The first 100 reminders are free.
• Every card offers open in wander when Wander is on this Mac, beside open in obsidian when Obsidian is; neither button appears for an app that is not installed.
• A card that is still reading its source shows a spinner, not "nothing yet". Screen Time could say it had no days for ten seconds while its header counted 29, because one read that landed while macOS was writing the database was remembered as empty. Contacts and Messages had the same gap.

Fixed

• A database that could not be read for one moment no longer marks the run as failed. Screen Time and Contacts read again after a second, and only a second failure is reported.

Improved

• Setting up an app takes one line: numbered steps, the step's name with an (i), and the one button. Card headers say what the free allowance covers and when the source last synced, "saves to" holds the folder and the format, and every list ends on a whole row.
• Exporter is Exporter now, with a website, exporter.dev: docs for every app and guides for Obsidian, backups and Claude, in twenty languages. Help links to it instead of carrying its own pages.
• Three changes can touch an existing setup. Apple Notes files carry less front matter (below), so a Dataview query or a Bases view that reads word_count, reading_time, folder_path, aliases or the counts needs changing. The command line is called exporter, so copy the install command from the Command Line card once more. And `exporter export --source contacts` now writes the layout the Contacts card is set to.
• Apple Notes files carry the title, the id, the dates, the link back to Apple Notes, the cover and the links in the note. Aliases, the folder path, word count, reading time and the checklist and attachment counts are gone. They were worked out from the note, so every edit rewrote the file for information nobody asked for.
• Apple Notes and Contacts have an "organize" setting: by folder, by tag or by smart folder, and for Contacts one folder, by group or by company. It is the only thing that changes where files go, and it starts as the layout you have today, so nothing moves. It is one line, with where a file lands shown at its end, and the small buttons under it only filter the list.
• A full resync removes only the files Exporter wrote, then writes everything again. Anything else in the export folder stays: your own notes, a vault's .obsidian folder, the documents a Documents export reads from.
• Two Bear notes with the same title under one tag each get their own file, and a Bear note you delete, rename or retag loses its old file on the next sync. Logseq pages behave the same way.
• Unlocking Messages exports every conversation on the next sync, without a full resync. Sync now waits for indexing to finish instead of doing nothing, and the conversation count matches the list.
• The app is Exporter.app, and the command line is exporter. The old name keeps working after one new install, and the command finds the app by itself, so a later move will not break it. doctor checks Documents and Logseq too.
• The MCP card says which export folders agents can see, and its Claude Code button copies the command that adds the server.
• Messages exports your 50 most recent conversations free, up from 10.
• Settings unlocks Screen Time and Documents too, the footer names each app's own free limit, and the rating and feedback card opens to rate, issue, idea and question.
• Bear notes with no tag export too, into an `_untagged` folder, and sit in the tag list as "untagged", so you can untick them like a tag.
• Apple Notes exports every note: a note no folder showed (no title, no folder, or a folder named like the trash) is now in the list under "other notes" and exports like the rest.
• Unticking something removes its files on the next sync, in every app; tick it again and sync to bring them back. A Screen Time day that macOS has already dropped keeps its file forever.
• The free allowance goes to your newest items first in every app (for Contacts, the most recently changed cards), and anything already exported keeps its place, so reaching the limit never costs you a file.
• Documents follows the same rule: unticking a document removes its converted files on the next sync.
• An Apple Note you tick again comes back with the next real-time sync, not only with sync now.
• The unlock button shows a spinner while the App Store is opening and cannot be pressed twice.
• Counts read right in every language: "1 note", "2 notes", and each language's own plural forms.

Fixed

• An export that reads nothing, because a database cannot be opened or a folder is not mounted, no longer empties its export folder. Files that did not change are left alone on every sync.
• The Documents source folder can no longer be the export folder or sit inside it, and the other way round. Two files whose names differ only in capital letters, like Report.pdf and report.docx, each get their own file.
• `exporter export` writes what each card has ticked for Contacts, Messages, Screen Time and Documents, the same as sync. It used to write every card, conversation, day and document.

Dutch and Greek, which takes the app to nineteen languages besides English

The last export message that was still English is translated too.

Improved

• Every source card now shows how far it is from its first export, one step at a time, and the steps go away once you have synced that source. A card that is folded up says where it is too, "step 1 of 3" beside "not connected", rather than leaving you to guess how far away connected is.
• Any file in the Documents list can be converted on its own. Hover a row and a button at its right converts just that document, so a folder of papers can be dipped into rather than synced whole. It counts against the same free allowance a sync does, and at the free limit the row shows a lock instead of starting a run.

Fixed

• A note that Apple Notes was in the middle of rewriting no longer counts as a failure. While iCloud settles, Apple Notes can rewrite a note underneath the export, so the same note could fail one minute and export perfectly ten minutes later. Such a note is read a second time before anything is reported, and the message says what happened rather than naming the part of the file that could not be read.
• What's new, in the About page, is in your own language now. It used to be an English list under an app translated everywhere else.

Documents, a new source

Point it at a folder and it turns Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OpenDocument, RTF, EPUB, CSV and PDF files into markdown.

New

• The command line learned the new source: exporter sync --source documents.

Improved

• Conversion happens entirely on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded, including scanned pages, which are read with Apple's own text recognition.
• Documents can write more than one format at once. Its format row is checkboxes now, so a document can land as markdown for your vault and as HTML out of one sync, side by side in the same folder.
• Every screen is translated. The About page, the Apps page and a few source cards were still English in other languages.
• An About page, reachable from the app menu, the heart in the footer and its own tab. It carries the story of the app, who made it, and the newsletter.

Fixed

• Contacts groups were showing every card in an account rather than the groups you made, which made the tab useless. Groups and Companies are trees now, like folders, and each one exports into its own folder: groups/Family/ada.md. People in no group and cards with no company get a folder of their own rather than disappearing.
• Smart folders from Apple Notes are a tab of their own, beside Folders and Tags. A smart folder is a saved search, so its notes are worked out fresh on every sync rather than read from a list. One whose rule this version cannot read says so instead of exporting the wrong notes.
• Connecting Apple Notes is simpler: the panel opens on the folder the app needs and the wrong one can no longer be picked. Closing the panel now tells you how to get back to it.
• The folder you pick for exports is the folder your files land in. Choosing a folder you made yourself used to put everything in a subfolder inside it, whatever you picked.

Pick your conversations

The Messages card lists every conversation with a checkbox, so you can untick the ones you do not want exported.

• Messages sync is much faster: photos convert on every core, and the next conversation loads while the current one is written. The free counter ticks live during a sync.
• Settings has notes database diagnostics that show whether the app can read your Notes library, and problem reports include that summary on their own, so one report is enough.

Every conversation becomes one markdown file: a heading per day, who said what and when, reactions on the message they belong to, edited messages with their earlier versions as footnotes, replies as real links, and the photos and videos people sent copied next to the text.

Readable in dark mode

Links, status text and every accent color adapt to light and dark instead of staying a light-mode blue on a dark background, and contrast is checked on every build so it cannot drift back.

Improved

• Cleaner typography. The monospaced face is used only for counts, dates, file paths and commands; everything else reads in the system font.
• One obvious action per source. Sync now is a proper primary button instead of one of six identical buttons, with the quieter actions grouped beneath it.
• The free tier says what it means. You can see how many of your 100 free notes are used, and it says plainly that your first 100 notes keep re-syncing free forever; only new notes past 100 need the one-time unlock.

Your export folder mirrors your notes

Files whose note was deleted, renamed or moved away are removed, tracked by a manifest so nothing the app did not write is ever touched.

Improved

• Exports started from cron, Carbon Copy Cloner or any root-owned automation stay attached and return the real exit code. macOS was suspending the export when no desktop session was present, and the caller read that as the command finishing while the export was still writing.

Fixed

• Attachment filenames no longer change between exports. When two attachments in one folder share a name, the suffix is decided up front and stays the same every run, so backup tools stop recopying identical files.
• One run log per export, written in the folder that run wrote to. The duplicate copy that used to land in your sync folder is gone, and the export log still reads every folder the app knows about.
