Contacts as people notes in Obsidian

A note per person in your vault, every field a Property.

Steps

  1. Make a folder for people inside your vault, like Vault/People, not the vault itself.
  2. Press “connect” on the Contacts card. The panel opens in your AddressBook folder: press “Select this folder”.
  3. Press “select export folder” and choose Vault/People.
  4. Pick the layout with the tab the card is on: All writes every card into one folder, Groups into groups/<group>/, Companies into companies/<company>/. Tick the cards you want.
  5. Press “sync now”. An edited card rewrites its note while Exporter runs.

What you get

Vault/People/
  Anna Kowalski.md
  Ben Ortiz.md

Each note’s front matter holds what the card has, as values and lists Obsidian’s Properties panel shows:

organization: "Northwind Studio"
job_title: "Art director"
birthday: 1990-12-10
phones:
  - "+1 415 555 0123 (mobile)"
groups:
  - "Studio"

Export Messages into the same vault too, and each person’s note lists their conversations while each conversation links its people.

Pitfalls

  • Give people a folder of their own, so their notes and yours stay apart. A “full resync” removes only the files Exporter wrote.
  • Edits made in Obsidian are not sent back to Contacts, and the next write of that card replaces them. Add your own notes about a person in a separate note.
  • Switching the tab moves the files on the next sync. On the free allowance you get your first 100 ticked cards.

Every field, with its key, is in the Contacts docs.
