# Export Notion to Markdown

One file per page and per database row on your Mac, in the folders Notion shows, kept in sync with your workspace.

## A database row, as a file.

The front matter carries its id, dates, link and database, then the row's properties under their own names. Then the title and the row's page.

`Write the plan.md`

## What comes out

Your pages in the folders Notion shows them in: a page with pages under it gets a folder of its own beside its file.

- Pages as plain Markdown: Headings, lists, to-dos, quotes, code and tables. A callout is a quote with its icon, a toggle a details block.
- Databases as folders and a CSV: One file per row with its properties in the front matter, and the whole table as a CSV beside the folder.
- Images copied: Images and files Notion hosts are copied into attachments beside their page, because Notion's links to them expire.
- Links between pages: A link to another exported page becomes a relative link to its file, so it works in Obsidian and any editor.
- Within minutes: Notion tells Exporter's server about every edit, move and deletion, and the file on your Mac follows within minutes.
- Read only: Exporter asks Notion only to read and never changes a page or a database.

## How it works

1. Connect Notion: Sign in with Apple, then pick the pages Exporter may read on Notion's page in your browser and allow access.
2. Choose items: Pages and databases, all ticked. Untick what you don't want.
3. It syncs: Your pages arrive as Markdown, and every change after it within minutes.

## Questions

### What does it cost?

The first 7 days are free. Then Exporter Cloud is a subscription in the App Store: Notion on its own, or All Cloud for Linear, Notion and every cloud source we add, monthly or yearly.

### Which pages sync?

The pages you share with Exporter on Notion's screen, and the pages and databases under them. To add a page later, open its ⋯ menu in Notion and add the exporter.dev connection.

### Why does Notion go through a server?

Notion tells a server the moment something changes, so the server keeps your files current and your Mac pulls them. Your Mac never holds the Notion token.

### Is my workspace stored anywhere?

The files are kept on Exporter's storage in Western Europe so your Mac can fetch them, and deleted 30 days after a plan ends. [Privacy](https://exporter.dev/privacy) has the details.

### Can I use the files in Obsidian or Claude?

Yes. They are plain Markdown with front matter: pick a folder inside your Obsidian vault, or point Claude Code at the folder.

### What happens when I stop paying?

Syncing stops and the files on your Mac stay. Subscribe again and it carries on.

## Against the alternatives

Notion exports a page or the whole workspace as a zip from its menus, once, by hand.

| | Exporter | Notion's own export | Copy and paste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every page at once | Yes | Yes | No |
| Readable Markdown | Yes | Yes | By hand |
| Kept in sync | Yes | No | No |
| Price | 7 days free, then a subscription | Free | Free |
